Role
Water is a priceless gift of nature. Without water, one cannot imagine the existence of life or civilization. Throughout history, every human civilization has been established near water sources. Irrigation has been a key factor in agriculture, which remains the backbone of India’s economy.
In the ancient Hindu scriptures, irrigation management was also of great importance. As early as 300 years ago, Chandragupta Maurya's advisor suggested the strategic importance of irrigation for defeating enemies and supporting the state's growth.
Today, the Irrigation and Water Resource Department of Uttar Pradesh continues to focus on the development of dams, canals, and wells, ensuring that citizens have sufficient access to water while avoiding the horrors of flooding.
Historical Significance of Water Management
Throughout history, water resources like wells, canals, and dams were considered vital for livelihood and survival. In the Rig Veda, references to well-digging and canal maintenance show the significance of irrigation to society. This tradition of water conservation continues in Uttar Pradesh today, ensuring the sustainable use of water for agriculture and household use.
